What Is Rough Opening?

The framed wall opening prepared to receive a door or prehung door assembly before finish materials are installed.

The rough opening is the framed opening in the wall that is prepared to receive the door assembly. It is normally larger than the finished opening to provide space for installation, shimming, leveling, and adjustment.

Buying Considerations

Use the manufacturer's rough-opening requirements rather than a generic rule when possible. Confirm width, height, wall thickness, plumb conditions, and whether the opening is intended for a single, double, pocket, or other configuration.
