What Is Quarter-Sawn?

A wood-cutting method that produces prominent grain patterns and, in some species, distinctive ray or fleck figures.

Quarter-sawn describes lumber or veneer cut so the growth rings are oriented more nearly perpendicular to the face. Depending on the species, this can produce a straighter grain and distinctive ray or fleck patterns.

Buying Considerations

Choose quarter-sawn material when its characteristic grain and stability are part of the design goal. Verify the cut and finish sample because the visual result varies by species and finish.
