What Is Mortise Lock?

A lockset installed in a pocket cut into the door edge and body rather than mounted only through the face.

A mortise lock is installed in a recessed pocket cut into the door edge and body. The lock case contains the latch and other operating components and is typically paired with a compatible cylinder, trim, or lever set.

Buying Considerations

Confirm the exact lock case dimensions, door thickness, backset, edge preparation, handing, and required machining. Mortise lock preparation is more extensive than standard cylindrical lock bore preparation.
