What Is Finished Opening?

The completed, trimmed opening available for the door assembly after framing and wall finishes are installed.

The finished opening is the completed opening after the wall, drywall, plaster, or other finishes are installed. It differs from the rough opening, which is the larger framed opening prepared before finish materials are applied.

Use the finished opening when the project specifically calls for finished dimensions. Always confirm which opening measurement the supplier's size chart or order form expects before selecting a door or prehung unit.
